“Sarap balik-balikan ang ITCPH,” “Ang daming nabago sa ITCPH,” “Dagdag kaalaman ulit.” Well, these were just some comments or impressions made by this year’s batch of Refresher Course participants.

Yearly, we conduct a Refresher Course for our alumni. But what made the difference this year was that, the course was held simultaneously with the celebration of ATI-ITCPH’s Silver Anniversary. Therefore, it was more fun and well-attended with 40 alumni coming from all over the Philippines.

Although the participants came from both the government and private sector and from different batches, they were able to bond as one big ITCPH family!

The 4-day course started with the celebration of the Silver Anniversary and awarding program for partners and outstanding ITCPH alumni. It was followed by a technical seminar conducted by UNAHCO.

Ato Belen shares his story to the participants

The second day was the official opening of the course. Several lectures were shared by knowledgeable and notable speakers. Dr. Eugene Mende, Veterinary Services Manager of San Miguel Foods, Inc. discussed the topic on “General Strategies in Controlling and Eliminating Pig Disease Outbreaks.” Dr. Luna Miraflor N. Aguirre, Technical and Regulatory Manager of Virbac Phils., Inc. had a topic on “Non-Negotiables in Breeding and Farrowing Management” while Mr. Tomas B. Buizon shared his expertise on “Biogas.”

The participants had a field trip on the third day at ATO BELEN’S FARM in San Pablo City. It is an integrated farm with a 60-sow level farm, vermiculture, fruit tree nursery, production of lactic acid bacteria serum and an “organically” grown vegetable garden. Noteworthy, the farm produces organic fertilizer for the trees and vegetables as well. It also produces seedlings of different fruit trees that are for sale. The lactic acid bacteria serum (LactoBac LAS-1) is added to piglet feeds to minimize diarrhea and odor.

The group also re-activated the ITCPH Alumni Association. New set of officers were elected and inducted. The alumni also had a business meeting and prepared their Action Plan for 2011. The new officers are: Domingo Nace – President, Joe Dumancas – Vice –President, Cresencia Ildefonso – Secretary, Runelita Panganiban – Treasurer, Gomer Decano – Auditor, and Virgilio Tango – Business Manager. The Board of Trustees are: Julgacion Rubio – Mindanao, Emelita Consolacion and Arthur Fontanilla – Luzon, and Jason Acera – Visayas.

In a nutshell, as was said in their impressions, “they had a wonderful time, had renewed knowledge and of course, renewed communication and bonding amongst the alumni!”

We look forward to another Refresher Course in 2011! ■
